Can a woman preach in church?

The first person to preach the risen Christ in a congregation was Mary Magdalene, a woman. After being resurrected, Jesus first appeared to Mary Magdalene and sent her to announce to the disciples that He would ascend to the Father; and Mary went to the disciples who were congregating with closed doors in fear of the Jews and did what Jesus commanded her (Mark 16: 9; John 20: 17-19).

Jesus then went to where the disciples were gathered to confirm what Mary Magdalene had announced (John 20:20), because the disciples had not believed her testimony (Mark 16:11).

One of the first people, if not the first to recognize Jesus as the Christ in a city, was a woman, known as the woman of Samaria. After a moment of dialogue with Jesus, Samaria's wife entered the city, evangelized everyone and the people left and went to Jesus to hear Him (John 4: 28-30).

These biblical events show us that Jesus counts on women to preach His Word inside and outside the church. Jesus shows us, in a practical way, that he is not only willing to use women for the Kingdom, but is also ready to spread the message, just as he did with Mary Magdalene.

Regarding to the position of women in the church “Women are silent in churches, because they are not allowed to speak; but be subject, as the law also commands” (1 Corinthians 14:34). I say in truth, that the apostle Paul wrote this because of the hardness of your hearts, but, in the beginning of the gospel of Christ, it was not so as you see above.

The Corinthian church was very problematic, there was a lot of confusion; even children had sex with their parents (1 Corinthians 5: 1). Paul had to be radical to bring order back to that church (II Corinthians 7:10). That is why he resorted to the law to be able to teach this, and not to Christ's example; hence the placement "as the law also commands" (1 Corinthians 14:34).

Regarding to the follow verse: “I do not allow that the woman teaches nor uses authority over her husband, but that she is silent” (I Timothy 2:12), Paul is talking about the wifeʼs behaviour in marriage. Paul is saying that a woman must be respect her husband and avoid to discuss with him. It’s important to say that in this verse Paul says: “i do not allow woman to teach her husband”.

It is easy to understand this, just observe that Priscilla and her husband Aquila taught the doctrine of Christ to Apollo (Acts 18:26). Priscilla and Aquila walked with Paul (Acts 18: 3,18). If Paul were forbidding women to teach, Priscilla would not have participated in Apollo's induction of the doctrine of Christ.

Long before the beginning of the gospel of Christ, God had already promised a new way of being and being in the Kingdom. In Joel 2:28, God says "I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and daughters will prophesy ...". To preach the Word is to prophesy; when you preach, edify, exhort, and comfort (1 Corinthians 14: 3). Prophesying is not just predicting the future; to prophesy is to proclaim the will of God.

Beloved sisters, if in your hearts there is a desire to be a preacher or co-worker, I ask you not to kill that desire; rather feed him following the example of Mary Magdalene who tried to be close to the Lord Jesus in words, thoughts and attitudes. When we are connected to Jesus, we bear much fruit (John 15: 5).

Now this beloved, who speaks of fruit, speaks of a tree; he who speaks of a tree speaks of sowing; and he who speaks of sowing speaks of seed. Now, whoever takes care of the seed, hoping that one day it will sprout; after sprouting, expect it to grow; and after growing up, wait for the tree to bear fruit.

In Christ, things are not linear like this process. But I write these things so that you can understand that it will not always be as it happened with the wife of Samaria, who became a great evangelist after talking with Jesus; sometimes it is necessary to sow, and that requires patience, meditation, prayer and the exercise of the instructions that the Bible gives in your life.

I'm done preaching! If you are that person who wants to return to Jesus, click here to say the prayer of acceptance.
